Subject: Kidney failure after long-term use of Prograf (following Liver Transplant).
Patient's new kidney also began to slowly fail/decline (initially after transplant, while still on Prograf). The new kidney immediately began to recover after stopping the Prograf. Expert medical studies show that Prograf is toxic to the kidneys... Medical studies by experts at Albert Einstein Transplant Center support/promote the idea of stopping Prograf due to toxic effects on the kidney and using Cellcept (a…

Just had my latest infusion of Albumin and Lasix on Wednesday. Thursday I slept for 15 hours! It always takes the wind out of me the day after, but normally by Friday I am feeling tons better, even better than before I had the infusion. My labs came back pretty stable setting my Meld at 13. I really hate seeing it drop again during my hospital stays. I went into the hospital at 23 and after a week of pills and IVs they get it to go down. Seems kind of pointless. How am I ever going to get a live…

HEROES OF HOPE
by Ashley Tenczar Curran
I think it was the first time that I heard the words..”He needs a liver transplant”, that it all sort of sunk in to my brain, and I thought I had a grip on the situation.
That was before those words went on a journey through my soul, and lan…

my shoulder needs to be xrayed soon..hurry? necrosis is necrosis, my discomfort has gotten too uncomfortable. Similar to the pain before, in my hips and knee. Onset? It's not a weight bearing joint/bone, so the need to compensate for the pain in my daily mobility isn't urgent, noticeable. The discomfort wakes me, so that is an issue I need to address. I'm going to make a Ortho appt after I submit my blog. Thanks for letting me share my moment/time with all of you. I hope my blog finds everyone w…

Chemists in Taiwan are reporting that an ingredient in
licorice widely used in various foods and herbal medicines appears to block the absorption of cyclosporine, a drug used by transplant patients to prevent organ rejection. This drug interaction could potentially result in transplant rejection, causing illness and even death among patients worldwide who take cyclosporine and licorice together, the researchers caution.
The study is the first…

In the past my posts have been very general about the need for and benefit of organ donation. Today, though, I want to be more specific and discuss how minorities are affected by organ donation and transplantation.
There is some evidence to indicate a reluctance to donate by minorities is based on what they believe is unequal treatment – minorities giving up organs for rich non-minorities. The facts are clear – more members of the minority population will benefit if there is a…

Researchers in Cincinnati and Louisville report that immunosuppressive risks associated with facial transplantation may be lower than thought, possibly making the procedure a safer option for people who have suffered severe facial injuries.
Previous data on the immunosuppression risks involved in facial transplantation were misleading, according to Rita Alloway, PharmD, and Steve Woodle, MD, of the University of Cincinnati (UC), and a University of Louisville team led by John Barker, MD, PhD. T…
